Problem

There are 2 existing bores on the site, one is 300ft deep bore that gives out black water, and the other is as 1200 ft bore that yields only 400 to 500 litres of water and is dry during the summer months. As a result, there is acute water shortage, especially in the summers, making the school dependant on water tankers.

Also, stormwater flows out to the roads and drains, instead of having a proper way to return to mother earth.

Solution

The site is in the heart of Gachibowli which is a fast-developing area. It becomes pertinent to recharge groundwater and reuse rainwater.

Rainwater Harvesting: The site has 3 building blocks – The administration block, the primary school block, and the secondary school block. A cement ring recharge pit is created near the 300 ft borewell, which is recharged from rooftop water collected from the Administration block and half the second block. The borewell is now revived and gushing water.

Rainwater Storage and Recharge: The site has a 5 cu. meter sump to collect rainwater, which is currently lying unused. We created a silt trap near this sump, and a cement ring recharge pit between the sump and the 1200 ft deep bore.

Rainwater from the remaining half of the second block and the third block are channelised to the sump, after passing through the filter. The overflow from the sump goes to the recharge pit, which allows the water to percolate back into the ground.

The school now not only recharges its groundwater but also re-uses its rainwater for all the secondary purposes.
