Problem

At Indira Park, multiple water management issues are affecting the site. The raw water line from Bharat Seva Samtha is blocked, causing backflow through the sewer line near the washroom and allowing water to pass through the stormwater channel. Additionally, the Dhobi Ghat lane is directly connected to the bioswale storm channel, leading to potential contamination and ineffective drainage. These issues highlight a critical need for infrastructure repairs and proper separation of wastewater and stormwater systems to protect the park’s water quality and functionality.

Solution

To address the water contamination and drainage challenges at Indira Park, a two-pronged solution has been implemented focusing on both prevention and recharge. The first key intervention is arresting all contaminating inlets entering the park, especially those carrying mixed or polluted water. Several of these inlets were found to be channeling greywater and even sewer backflow into the park’s bioswale and stormwater systems—particularly from the Bharat Seva Samtha raw water line and Dhobi Ghat lane. By identifying and sealing these inlets, the risk of pollution reaching the lake and bioswale system is significantly reduced, helping to restore water quality and maintain ecological health within the park.

The second major intervention is the construction of three injection bore wells integrated with recharge pits and silt chambers. These were strategically located in low-lying, sloped areas of the park where large volumes of rainwater tend to accumulate and stagnate during the monsoon. The recharge systems are designed to filter, capture, and infiltrate this stormwater into the underlying shallow aquifers. Each pit includes a silt chamber that traps sediments and debris, ensuring only clean water enters the borewell. The borewells, drilled up to significant depths, help recharge the groundwater effectively, contributing to a rise in the local water table over time.

Together, these solutions not only mitigate contamination risks but also promote sustainable rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge, ensuring long-term water resilience for Indira Park and its surrounding areas.
